Chapter 2- Why Do You Call Him A Monster?

It’s been a week since we last went out, which means we have to go back out. I walked up to the gate, waving to Madison when I saw her. She waved back smiling. “Good morning, Madison.” I said as the gate opened and we walked out.

“Good morning, Angel.” She responded back. “I hope we don’t see that half-zombie again.”

“I want to see him again.” I said as she rolled her eyes, and I let out a laugh. “He was actually nice though.”

“Yeah, but he is deadly, very deadly.” She said letting out a sigh. “For all we know he could just be waiting for the right moment.”

“First, we only met him once. Second, he didn’t seem like that kind of person.” I said trying to defend him. To me he really did seem nice.

“That’s the thing your forgetting. He isn’t a person, he’s a monster.” Madison said a bit rudely.

“You can’t just judge him like that. You don’t know him, and neither do I. We can’t just jump to conclusions.” I said making random hand motions.

“I guess you are right.” She said finally giving in. We talked about how my dad is trying to stop drinking. On our way to the junkyard we heard a horde of zombies coming towards us.

“Oh no, we don’t have anywhere to hide!” I said scared looking around. The groaning and shuffling got closer, and we were surrounded by zombies. Madison started to shoot them until she ran out of bullets.

She was hit in the back of the head with a rock, and she was knocked out. A half-zombie jumped off a big piece of concrete, landing close to me. Another half-zombie? This one doesn’t seem so nice.

“Hello, you are that girl I saw with Zach. Do you happen to know where I can find him? If you tell me where he is, I won’t hurt you or your friend.” He said lifting my chin so that I was looking up at him. He’s about a foot taller than me, like Zach.

“I don’t know where he is, sorry…” I said quietly with tears threatening the back of my eyes from the fear. He smirked and gave a slight laugh. He moved one of his hands up to my hair, and he started playing with some of it.

“To bad, kill her friend.” He said as they started to move toward Madison. I tried to run toward her, but some of the zombies got in my way.

“No! Don’t hurt her, please! I’m telling the truth.” I said as he grabbed my wrist and pulled me back. He looked at me for a minute, then he looked up at the zombies,

“Fine, don’t let her go anywhere. I’m going to put her friend in front of their camp. I only need her anyways.” He said picking Madison up. He left then came back in less than five seconds. The zombies had been surrounding me for that short time.

He walked up to me, a sick smirk on his face. He leaned in close to my ear until the point in which I could feel his breath. “I wonder if he will save you.” He whispered in my ear before sitting on a chunk of a fallen building. “Attack the poor defenseless girl.”

When they started to move in, tears started to stream down my cheeks. I’m going to die, but I never got to say goodbye to Madison or my dad. Closing my eyes, I listened to my quivering voice, trying not to think about it.

I started to hear thuds, so I opened my eyes. Zach was keeping the zombies away from me. We just met, so why is he protecting me? “So, you did come to save her?” The other half-zombie asked, that sick smirk still plastered on his face.

“She has nothing to do with this, Nick. Let her go.” Zach said continuously punching the zombies away. “I just met her.”

“My zombies are hungry, she is their meal.” Nick said with a laugh. Zach started to get really angry, and grabbed one of the zombies by the throat.

“She is not feed for your stupid zombies!” Zach yelled angrily, punching one of the zombies head off. Nick started to laugh evilly.

“You shouldn’t care if you just met her.” Nick said looking at me then back at Zach. “Then again, you have always liked and cared for humans. Though I don’t see why. They die easily, like your last girlfriend.”

Zach’s anger reached its peak and he killed the rest of the zombies surrounding us. “They didn’t do anything to us, we attacked them first. The only reason they kill us is for self defense.” He said throwing a big rock at Nick, but he dodged it easily.

Nick sighed in annoyance, then smirked again. “Oh well, I will be back, Zach. Goodbye for now.” Nick said then disappeared, my shaking still wouldn’t stop. Zach turned to me, his face showing how worried he was.

“Angel, are you hurt? Did any of them bite you?” He asked starting to check me for bite marks. I hugged him, and started crying into his shirt from fear.

“I’m fine, none of them bit me. I was just so scared, Zach. I thought I was going to die.” I said as he wiped my tears away, then pulled me back into his chest. He gently pet the top of my head to try to calm me down.

“Shh, it’s okay now. I won’t let them hurt you.” He said with a gentle voice. After I was calmed down I pulled a bit away and looked up at him.

“I should get back to the camp. Madison and my dad must be so worried.” I said as he nodded in agreement. Zach picked me up piggy back styler, and I looked at him questionably.

“Hold on tight, I’ll take you back to your camp.” Zach said looking back at me with a smile. I blushed a deep shade of red and wrapped my arms around his neck. He started running, everything passing by like a blur. It took him a minute to get us back, but the walk would have taken me ten minutes.

When we got there we were suddenly surrounded by camp members with guns. He gently put me down, and I looked around. Zach put his hands in the air, giving in. “Back away her!” Madison yelled pointing her pistol at him.

Zach took a step back, moving away from me as she walked towards me. She then proceeded to move me away from him, and I looked back with sadness. “Madison, stop. He didn’t…” I said but she quickly cut me off from finishing.

“I knew we couldn’t trust him. He could have killed you.” She said angrily as I looked back at Zach. They chained his hands together, then dragged him off to the science building.

“You don’t understand Madison. He saved me from a different half-zombie. If he hadn’t of been there, I would have died.” I said looking at her with my sad eyes. She quickly looked away from me. “They’ll treat him like some lab rat. He doesn’t deserve that after he saved me.”

“That makes more sense for why he brought you back, but that doesn’t change what he is.” She said letting out a long sigh.

“He saved me, it doesn’t matter what you are, it’s who you are that counts.” I said as she gave me a sad look. “Now, please tell them to let him go.”

“I can’t, I promised that the scientist could have them for their test” Madison said with a sad look as my eyes grew wide.

“Oh no, I need to go talk to my dad.” I said running towards the science building. He runs the place, so maybe I can convince him to let Zach go.

“Angel? What are you doing here?” My father asked as I looked over to see Zach. They put him a cell with strong metal bars. They caged him up like an animal to. His hands are still chained too.

“Dad, you have to let him go.” I said looking over at my father. He gave me a stare telling me he thought I was crazy. “He’s not bad. He won’t hurt anyone, he saved me.”

“He’s a monster, Angel. The half-zombies are no better than the normal zombies that killed your mother. Did you forget about what happened to her?!” He yelled out angrily.

“No, I didn’t forget. I can never forget that day.” I said as tears stung my eyes. They streamed violently down my cheeks, and fell to the floor. Zach was looking at me sadly, and I saw him look at my dad with a slight glare.

“Then here, take this money. Go buy something to calm you down.” He said handing me some cash. I reluctantly grab the money as I nodded. On my way out of the building, I looked over at Zach apologetically. He simply smiled, and I wondered how he wasn’t mad at me. I just left him there to become a lab rat.
