Chapter 1- 2169, The Year of the Half-Zombie

“Angel!” My mother yelled for me to come back. I was by the fence surrounding our groups’ homes. I ran back to her quickly. There was a horde coming. “Listen, I want you to stay here and don’t come out until your father gets you. I love you.”

I quickly ran back home and closed the door. When father came he looked sad, but I was too young to really understand. “Where is mom?” I asked as he started crying.

“She’s gone, and she will never come back.” He said as I tilted my head. Wondering where she went.

“Where did she go?” I asked still not getting what he really meant by ‘gone’. He simply looked at me sadly, not knowing how to put it into words. My eyes grew wide and I ran out of the house. “Mom!”

The crowd of people turned and looked at me. I saw a glimpse of my mother's dead body. Tears started to uncontrollably stream down my cheeks. “She doesn’t need to see this. Madison, take her home.” The chief of the camp said as Madison nodded.

“Come along Angel.” Madison said leading me home.

I slowly opened my eyes, putting my hand above them to block the sun. That happened 13 years ago, I’m 18 no. I still live with my father, which is normal here. We only have a limited amount of housing. My father is a scientist looking for a cure to the zombie virus.

He’s nothing like he used to be. When he’s not working he’s usually drunk. I miss my mother so much. The zombies had broken the fence, and she was the closest. I’m currently in our little park, just sitting on a bench. When I look down at my watch, I notice it’s time to leave for my first day of work.

Walking up to the gate, I’m greeted by Madison. She is the leader now, and a good friend of mine. “Hi Angel.” She said happily.

“Hi Madison.” I said happily she’s going out into the city with me. When we go out, we go in groups.

“Let’s go.” She said grabbing her gun. All I have is a small pistol. She looked up at the men by the gates. They started to open the gate and we walked out. She kept her gun up just in case any zombies showed up.

We were out there for 10 minutes walking. We stopped, hearing multiple footsteps, which only meant one thing, there is a horde coming. We looked at each other then quickly hid.

There were more than usual, and they were moving faster too. “What’s going on?” I asked looking at Madison.

“I’m not sure.” She said as we watched a boy run by. There was something strange about him.

“Get back here!” He yelled out at the zombies. Is he stupid? Does he want to die? He suddenly disappeared, but then reappeared in front of them.

They all fell dead, and we stared shocked. “What the hell!?” Madison yelled out. He looked towards where we are as I put my hands over her mouth.

“Who’s there? Come out, I won’t hurt you.” He said with a gentle voice. We came out of hiding slowly.

“Hello…” I said with a quiet voice. He looked at us for a minute.

“You’re both humans.” He said as Madison and I looked at each other. Isn’t he human? Then again, he did just do that.

“Aren’t you a human?” Madison asked a bit quietly. He shook his head no. “Then, what are you?”

“Half-zombie.” He said as our eyes grew wide. They are known to be the deadliest. We both started shaking a little out of fear. “Don’t be scared of me. I have no intention of hurting you.”

“Your kind kill more than the normal zombies do a year.” Madison stated as he let out a sigh. She doesn’t seem to trust him at all. As for me, not sure why, but I felt like we could trust him.”

“I’m not like the others of my kind.” He said looking at her with a sad expression.

“What’s your name?” I randomly asked him. They both gave me weird looks, but then he smiled

“My name is Zach. What is yours?” He asked as Madison kept looking from me to him, then back at me. I smiled at him, happy that he answered.

“My name is Angel.” I said as Madison pointed her gun at him. “Madison don’t, I’m getting another one of those feelings.”

“You’re lucky, half-zombie, that I trust her feelings.” Madison said a bit mad now.

“My name is Zach, and your bullets wouldn’t work on me anyways.” Zach said calmly. “Anyways, if you’re looking for things to salvage, follow me.”

We followed behind closely. He had led us to an old junkyard. These are perfect to find metal in. He stayed as we rummaged through everything, looking for useful metals.

“You don’t have to stay.” I said stopping and looking at him. Zach simply smiled, not saying a word. I continued looking until I came across some hidden boxes of bullets. “Madison, I found some bullets.”

“Really? Nice find, put them in your bag. They’ll be useful back at camp.” She said with a big smile. I took my bag off and put them in there like she told me to.

We found a few more small things before deciding to leave. “This should be enough thank you for your help, Zach.” I said looking at him with a smile.

“No problem. It was nice meeting you.” He said then walked off. I had replied with ‘nice to meet you too,’ before he left. After we got back and turned everything in, I walked home. I unlocked the door, then walked inside.

My father was drinking on the couch. “Where’s dinner?” He asked sweetly. Well, at least he’s not drunk yet. That’s good, He must not have been home for long.

“It will be done soon.” I said smiling. I’ll just make sandwiches since they won’t take long to make. I made multiple ham sandwiches and brought a few to him.

“Thank you, Angel.” He said smiling then put his drink down. I finally realized it wasn’t alcohol. “I’m trying to stop drinking. I know you don’t like it when I do drink.”

I smiled then kissed his forehead. “Thank you dad. I’m off to bed, I’ll see you tomorrow.” I said waving, starting to go up stairs. When I got into my room, I got changed into pajamas. Laying in bed, I looked out my window. I wonder if I will ever see Zach again.
